Helping Capable Students Manage Rigor and Become Independent

New Canaan students don't lack ambition, they lack margin. Between rigorous course loads, athletics, and activities, the students we meet here are often doing everything at once and managing none of it well: assignments tracked in their heads, studying that starts the night before, and a growing gap between how hard they work and what their grades show.

That gap is almost never about ability. It's about executive function, the planning, organization, time management, and follow-through skills that demanding schools assume but rarely teach. Diversified Education Services has been coaching these skills since 2009, one-on-one, in students' homes, with a team of special education–certified coaches led by founder Aron Boxer, a former Greenwich Public Schools special education teacher and private school Director of Special Services. New Canaan is fifteen minutes from our Cos Cob office, and we've been serving families here for years.

The Transition Years Are Where Students Slip

Ask New Canaan parents when things got hard, and the answers cluster around the same moments: the move into Saxe, the jump to New Canaan High School, the first honors or AP year, the first semester of college. Each transition raises the executive function demands, more teachers, more platforms, longer-horizon assignments, less scaffolding, and students who coasted on memory and intelligence suddenly can't. The same pattern shows up for families whose children attend area independent schools such as New Canaan Country School and St. Luke's School, where academic expectations ramp up early.

We specialize in exactly these inflection points. Coaching often begins in the months before or after a transition, when new habits are easiest to build and the stakes of old habits become visible. For students already mid-slide, we start with what's due this week and build backward into systems.

What Executive Function Coaching Supports

Organization

We help students organize materials, assignments, notes, digital platforms, binders, backpacks, and school routines.

Time Management

Students learn how to estimate time, plan ahead, manage deadlines, and avoid last-minute academic stress.

Planning & Prioritizing

We teach students how to break larger assignments, projects, and test preparation into realistic steps.

Task Initiation

For students who procrastinate or avoid work, coaching helps create structure, momentum, and accountability.

Study Skills

Students learn more effective approaches to note-taking, test preparation, active studying, and review.

Accountability

Weekly coaching creates consistency, follow-through, and a trusted adult relationship outside of parent conflict.

What Coaching Looks Like

Sessions happen in your home, at the desk where homework actually gets done. Coaches work with your student's real assignments, real planner (or lack of one), and real deadlines, building systems for tracking work, breaking down long-term projects, studying ahead of assessments, and starting tasks without a standoff. We call this functional academics: the coursework is the raw material; the skills are the curriculum.

Parents get a defined role, too, usually a smaller one than they currently have. A major goal of coaching is moving the accountability from you to your student, so that homework stops being a nightly negotiation.

Every DES coach holds special education certification and an advanced degree. Coaches document each session, and progress is reviewed monthly with Aron directly. When a student also needs subject-level help, honors chemistry, AP Calculus, essay writing, our academic tutors and reading specialists work alongside the coach within one coordinated plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer executive function coaching in New Canaan, CT?

Yes. DES provides one-on-one, in-home executive function coaching throughout New Canaan and nearby towns including Darien, Wilton, Stamford, and Greenwich. Remote sessions are also available.

Do you work with students at Saxe, New Canaan High School, and area private schools?

Yes. Our students attend New Canaan's public schools as well as area independent schools such as New Canaan Country School and St. Luke's School, and our coaches build systems around each school's actual platforms, schedules, and expectations. DES is an independent practice and is not affiliated with any school or district.

My child is smart but disorganized. Is coaching really necessary?

That profile, bright, capable, chronically disorganized, is precisely who executive function coaching is for. These skills respond to explicit instruction and practice; waiting for students to outgrow the problem usually means watching the same pattern repeat with higher stakes.

Do you provide ADHD coaching?

Yes. Our coaches support students and adults with ADHD using structured, research-backed strategies for focus, task initiation, planning, and follow-through. A diagnosis is not required to work with us.

Can coaching be combined with subject tutoring?

Yes. When students need content help in math, science, or writing alongside coaching, we coordinate tutors and coaches within one plan rather than sending you to a second provider.

How do we start?

Schedule a free consultation. We'll talk through what's happening, and Aron personally matches your student with a coach, typically within 24–48 hours.
